Target shooting is enjoyed by thousands of people across the UK but organising any sport on such a vast scale can lead to legal issues. These can range from employment and property disputes for clubs to members seeking to challenge a decision to revoke their firearms certificate.
If you run a small-bore rifle club or simply enjoy taking part in the sport, you should consider legal expenses insurance. This can give you peace of mind if issues arise either during the day-to-day running of your club, or if you find yourself among the increasing number of people who have their firearms certificates taken away.

Protecting Clubs
For clubs our insurance will cover the cost in a wide range of legal disputes, such as the cost of representation in an employment dispute at an employment tribunal or a court. We also cover property and landlord and tenant disputes, which might include trespass, nuisance or damage affecting your property. Alternatively, disputes also arise from a landlord’s failure to maintain or repair your property.
In a criminal defence we cover costs such as those for representation during an interview under caution and the defence against a prosecution. And we may cover the cost of representation before HMRC in tax disputes, or in regulatory compliance cases such as an appeal against an enforcement notice.

Fighting Revocation
Our policy for individual club members covers the cost of an appeal if your firearms certificate is revoked. In the year to the end of March 2024, 507 firearms certificates were revoked, a 21% increase compared to the previous year. It was the highest number of revocations since comparable records began in 2007.
At the same time 6% of new firearm certificates were declined, which was also the highest proportion since 2007. Our insurance will cover the costs of fighting these decisions or any conditions that are imposed on your certificate.
