ISSF World Tour Target Sprint – Dingolfing, Germany: GB athletes excel with Double Gold
Between the 31st of July 2021 and 2nd of August 2021 the ISSF World Tour Target Sprint, was held in Dingolfing, Germany.
Representing Great Britain two athletes were selected, Emily Shawyer aged 19 in the Junior Women Category and Callum Jones aged 19 in the Junior Men category.
Given the lack of event opportunities all the top international athletes including World Champions in each category were in attendance, so the competition was extremely competitive. To build to the excitement and volume another 65 athletes were in attendance as the venue also hosted the Bavarian Championships over the same period, running after each of the international race events.
The GB team arrived on Thursday the 30th of July with pre-event training on the Friday. The weather forecast was for a heavy storm and localised flooding on the Sunday and so the organisers changed the programme so that all races were conducted on one day. The venue also had to be changed just two weeks in advance from the usual town centre on concrete to the archery centre on a challenging undulating and twisting grass course, due to Covid precautions.
Friday night ended and Saturday morning began with huge thunderstorms and then as the athletes arrived at the venue the sun broke through the temperature and humidity soared. The conditions were tough for the athletes.
After two races in the Junior Women class Emily Shawyer came top taking the title and Gold medal. In second place the Silver medal went to the German athlete Edith Buschsieweke and in third place the Bronze medal went to the Italian athlete Mattilde Rossi.
Following Emily’s success Callum stepped forward in his first GB appearance. After two races in the Junior Men class Callum Jones came top taking the title and Gold medal. In second place the Silver medal went to the Italian athlete Marco Ammirati and in third place the Bronze medal went to the Italian athlete Mattilde Rossi.
These are the first Gold medals ever won by a GB athlete internationally at an ISSF Target Sprint event.
GB Team Leader Robert Shawyer said: “Both athletes have been working with their individual training plans altered significantly during lockdown and executed their race strategies to perfection. They have both shown great shooting skill combined with amazing athletic ability and of course a bagful of determination. To come away with one Gold medal would have been outstanding given the depth and strength of the international competition but to take gold in both events is a testament to these athlete’s commitment and preparation and is a historic moment internationally for GB. I could not be prouder of what they have both achieved”
