There has been a change in anti-money laundering legislation which is being implemented by HMRC.
If a club has within its constitution (or other document) a clause whereby the property of the club is held in trust by a person or a group of individuals they will be affected.
This person or group are regarded as “property trustees” and fall under the legislation and be required to register with the trust registration service. This can be done on the government website at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/register-a-trust-as-a-trustee
This applies whether the club pays tax or not but clubs that are registered charities are exempt from the legislation.
The legislation was brought in on 1st September 2022 but has so far been considered a soft deadline. It is unlikely that there will be penalties for registering late but we would strongly recommend registering as soon as possible to avoid any future action.
