A new name to most British shooters emerged as a convincing winner of the British Open Men's Air Pistol Championship.
Sylwester Los, a Polish national but shooting out of the Roding Rifle & Pistol Club in Essex, cruised through the final to win by 8.5 points with 677.3. He finished ahead of Simon Preston, who moved up from fourth to second, and Mick Gault, whose 100.3 in the final elevated him from sixth to third. Starting the final in second place, Nick Baxter battled gamely in finishing fourth, despite underging surgery in the recent past, leaving him still on crutches when not actually shooting. The Women's Championship also saw a name going on the trophy for the first time when Julia Lydall clawed back the three-point lead held by Caroline Brownlie at the start of the final. On the other hand Chris Summerscales won the Disabled Championship for the fourth time in seven years, holding off the challenge of Adrian Bunclark, the defending Champion. In the Junior Women category Danielle Jones had a seven-point lead at the start of the final. However the defending Champion, Geri Buckley, started to erode the lead with her first shot and continued steadily throughout, eventually to move into the lead with the last shot. Perhaps the closest final looked like it would be that for the Junior Men's title, where the top three shooters were separated by only four points. Benefitting from the fact that the winner for the last three years, Glen Eldershaw, had moved up to the seniors, Daniel Hickabottom and Craig Auden fought each other hard for the Silver Medal. Craig won this particular tussle but only after they changed position several times. However neither could catch the winner, Kristian Callaghan, shooting on his home range. | | Men | | | | 1 | Sylwester Los | Roding | 677.3 | | 2 | Simon Preston | York Jubilee | 667.8 | | 3 | Mick Gault | Norwich City | 667.3 | | | | | | | | Women | | | | 1 | Julia Lydall | BPC | 468.2 | | 2 | Caroline Brownlie | Itchen Valley | 465.6 | | 3 | Kathryn Hector | Cambridge 177 | 459.3 | | | | | | | | Junior Men | | | | 1 | Kristiam Callaghan | Centurion | 644.8 | | 2 | Craig Auden | South Wales 10m | 639.5 | | 3 | Daniel Hickabottom | SCAWS | 638.0 | | | | | | | | Junior Women | | | | 1 | Geri Buckley | Durham University | 458.8 | | 2 | Danielle Jones | Carmarthen | 458.2 | | 3 | Hannah Polak | Holwell | 447.1 | | | | | | | | Disabled | | | | 1 | Chris Summerscales | Parkland Doncaster | 642.1 | | 2 | Adrian Bunclark | Budleigh Farm | 634.1 | | 3 | Andrew Gardiner | Leicester & District | 631.0 |
