All members and RFD holders about to renew their firearms certificates should be aware of the need to allow adequate time for renewal. This has been emphasised by the Metropolitan Police in a circular to all National Governing Bodies and it is clear that a number of certificate holders lapse into unlawful possession through forgetfulness or simply not prioritising this legal requirement.
Reminder letters are sent out 12 weeks before the expiry of each individual and RFD certificate. In many cases non-renewal may be due to forgetfulness or the member having moved away from a previous address. The Police however are now taking a much more serious view of this. The advice is to ensure you renew at least 8 weeks before expiry. The consequences of non-renewal may be that you have to lodge your firearms with a registered dealer.
