This weekend sees 49 of the UK’s top outdoor shooters descend on Appleton Rifle Club in Cheshire, to take part in the trial to select the team who will compete in the GB Dewar Postal Competition versus the USA and Commonwealth countries such as Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, who often also compete in this prestigious event.
The trial consists of a “Double Dewar”, 40 shots at 50 metres and 40 shots at 100 yards. The top 20 athletes will be selected to shoot a single “Dewar” (20 shots at 50 metres and 20 at 100 yards).
The Dewar Match is named after Sir Tommy Dewar (Baron Dewar of Homestall) who rose to greatness as one of the Whisky Barons in the golden age of whisky between 1880 and the first World War. Click here for more history.
