Introduction to NSRA Proposal

This proposal is an attempt to demonstrate the ability of the National Shooting Centre, Bisley to host an Olympic shooting venue for 2012.

It addresses the problems of permanency, continuing legacy and longevity of future use in providing an entirely acceptable Olympic Venue, without absorbing or utilising further existing NRA grounds, which presently are destined for alternative development.

Building Olympic facilities within or adjacent to current and in use buildings is always a problem, which was identified in the original responses by both the NRA and the NSRA.

The ideas in this proposal will use both existing NSRA and NRA property specifically built for the Commonwealth Games, together with new buildings necessary to create a truly memorable and long lasting venue. Perhaps even more extraordinary is that the new facilities can immediately, with little modification, be absorbed into the present NSRA’s multi sports activities within the Lord Roberts Centre.

The Lord Roberts Centre is becoming a model, and now recognised in many parts of the world, on how different sports can combine successfully with international shooting facilities, both profitably and to the benefit of many different groups of people using the facility, including the local community.

The proposal is based on using the existing 50 metre small-bore ranges, suitably brought up to date with additional seating space, display equipment and the latest electronic targetry.

A pedestrian piazza will be created bordered by Lord Roberts Centre on one side and a new multi-storey car park and new combined air gun, 25 metre pistol and finals range on the other, which will also house visitor refreshments, a modern medical suite and officials’ accommodation.

This complex will allow full future use for international and world championship events, whilst still continuing to fulfil and enlarge its multi sports community role.

The shotgun competitions will take place within the facilities administered by the NRA and again originally built for the Commonwealth Games. Some modifications will be necessary to bring it to the latest Olympic standard but it is basically ready for use and indeed presently in use seven days a week. A new shotgun facility could be provided beyond the finals range if desired as it is proposed that the shotgun competitors will be housed at the Lord Roberts Centre complex and bussed to the shotgun site when required for practice or competition. The piazza will incorporate a bus stand for this purpose and also for visitor transportation.
